China Cracks Down on Surge in AI-Driven Fraud
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more prevalent in daily Chinese life, but it also brings new challenges and risks. One of them is the rise of AI-driven fraud, where scammers use hyperrealistic content generated by AI to deceive and extort victims.
According to The Wall Street Journal, China’s authorities have warned of the dangers of deep-synthesis technologies, which can create fake images, videos, voices, and texts that are hard to distinguish from reality. These technologies can be used for various purposes, such as impersonating celebrities, politicians, or business leaders, creating false news or propaganda, or tricking people into revealing personal or financial information.
To combat this threat, China’s cyberspace regulator has started enforcing rules that restrict the use and dissemination of deep-synthesis technologies. The rules require online platforms to clearly label any content that is produced or modified by AI and to obtain consent from the subjects of such content. The rules also prohibit the use of deep-synthesis technologies for illegal or harmful purposes, such as fraud, defamation, pornography, or inciting violence.
The Wall Street Journal reports that some Chinese companies and researchers have welcomed the rules as a way to protect the public and promote the ethical development of AI. However, some experts have also raised concerns about the potential impact of the rules on innovation and freedom of expression.
